Around Us – State Room

One of the oldest cities in the U.S., Boston is filled with culture and charm. From narrow cobblestone streets lined with historic brick townhouses to a thriving art scene, below you will find our favorite things to see, do and eat.

Annual events worth planning Your Event around:

Boston Marathon The Boston Marathon is the world’s oldest annual marathon and one of the most exclusive. Held each year on the third Monday in April, the Boston Marathon is filled with fun traditions including the Midnight Marathon Bike Ride where hundreds of cyclists ride the 26.2 mile course from Hopkinton to Copley Square. If you’re in town for the race, stake out a viewing spot with this mile-by-mile guide to cheer the runners on to the finish line.

The Head of the Charles Regatta The Head of the Charles Regatta is held each year in October. It is the world’s most anticipated rowing event drawing more than 11,000 athletes for 56 different races. One of the best places to watch your favorite crews is from between the Anderson and Weeks bridges, along the halfway point of the race.

Neighborhoods to explore – walking distance from State Room:

North End You might think you arrived in Italy. Lots of narrow streets, small, family owned stores, restaurants and cafes, Italian nonnas and nonnos sitting on benches and discussing how things have changed. North End is Boston’s oldest residential neighborhood. and history is around every corner (Paul Revere’s house,  the Old North Church). It is fun to catch one of many feasts and processions honoring Italian patron saints. One of the biggest ones, named the “Feast of all Feasts” by National Geographic, takes place in June. Play bocce  with the locals in Langone Park, then stop by Maria’s Pastry Shop for the best cannoli outside of Italy.

Beacon Hill Feed your wanderlust with a stroll along brick sidewalks and cobblestone streets past perpetually burning gas lamps and elegant row houses in this historic and charming neighborhood. Beacon Hill has is a quaint and cozy haven known for its beautifully crafted doors and intricate brass door knockers. Charles Street is home to dozens of restaurants, gourmet food markets, antique shops, and eclectic indie boutiques including local favorite December Thieves. Always beautiful, and to us especially romantic in winter time.

Boston Common and Boston Public Garden Adjacent to the Beacon Hill neighborhood, lay down on a grass in America’a oldest and park, Boston Common. Ice skating on Frog Pond is a popular past time during winter while summer months bring free theater performances by the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company. At the end of Charles Street, at the Boston Public Garden, to us the most beautiful garden in the world, you’ll find the famous bronze Make Way For Ducklings sculptures and the iconic Swan Boats.

Restaurants – walking distance from State Room:

Serafina Founded on the principle that food should be made by hand, with care, every time, Serafina Boston is known for serving up fresh, modern Italian fare including their famous thin-crust pizzas. In warmer months, enjoy it al fresco at the new Il Giardino at Serafina, a beautifully designed beer garden. Serafina Boston is located at 10 High Street within walking distance of the State Room. Also, great option for a smaller rehearsal dinner.

Bastille Kitchen You can only eat so much of New England clam chowder -sometimes you simply crave a classic French brasserie. Bastille always hits the spot for us. It is an interesting 15-20 minute walk from State Room: a little historic and a little industrial. You’ll pass by the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum as you cross the river. There, you’ll find many great stores, galleries and other food & drink places to explore.

Mistral The restaurant to go to if you are in mood for a sophisticated but unpretentious scene. The food is simply incredible. With no exception, we always get the Beef Tenderloin, Mashed Potato and White truffle Oil Pizza. Mistral has never undelivered in the almost 20 years we have been grateful to dine there.
